I am Juliane Rothan-Centers ~ but my students know me as Ms. J or Ms. RC.
My JOURNEY as a teacher began in 1998 as a Waldorf high school natural sciences teacher, but my passion is and most of my many years of teaching experience has been as a middle school Waldorf class teacher and international science and math teacher.
WALDORF cIass teachers teach all core academic subjects as well as art, music and theater and teach the same group of students for multiple years. As a class teacher, I taught several classes from fith/sixth through eighth grade. I crafted the basic Waldorf curriculum for each year to suit each class' unique characteristics and needs. Integrating all the subjects is essential in the Waldorf curriculum due to its format, thus weaving together math, science, language arts, social studies and the arts is a key characteristic of my teaching.
OTHER CERTIFICATIONS I hold - I have a bachelor’s degree in science and Waldorf certification, I also hold current California and Oregon teaching licenses and a master’s degree in education.
I became AN INTERNATIONAL EDUCATOR after nine years of class teaching in Waldorf charter and private schools. I taught seventh grade science and math in Thailand, fifth grade core subjects and fourth grade Language Arts in Bahrain and sixth through ninth grade science in Sudan. I am particularly gratified to have successfully incorporated many Waldorf principles into my all of my international classes and initiated a science fair focused on Solving Real World Problems and several field trips tied to the science curriculum in Sudan.
Many of the students, parents, colleagues and administrators I have worked with expressed APPRECIATION for my interest in and recognition of each student's unique strengths as well as my unwavering support for helping them develop their areas of challenge. I am thoroughly committed to helping each student understand themselves and achieve autonomy as lifelong learners. I want my students to LOVE learning.
I have taught for and serve on the board of SAS - an online supplemental Steam and Sustainability program for middle and high school students https://www.sasnyc.org/about-us .
As A LIFE LONG LEARNER MYSELF I completed an online Permaculture Design class in 2018. I am excited to learn about and practice permaculture design and integrate permaculture ideas into my standard science classes. I am committed to learning as much as I can about nutrition and alternative methods of healing and maintaining wellness -subjects my father and mother introduced to me as a youth. AND- I love cooking and love learning new techniques and recipes. Though I have been making sourdough bread and crackers for many years, I am still experimenting and learning sourdough bread techniques to get that perfect loaf!
In my life before teaching, I designed and sewed or knit clothes for myself, my daughters and my husband. I know how to make clothes that fit bodies and tastes. Plus, I had a school lunch program called "Great Meals" which gave me the opportunity to practice many business and cooking skills while providing my daughters and their friends and teachers with delicious and nutritious, hot meals.
CURRENTLY I am engaged in developing an entreprenuerial and permaculture project with my sisters and extended family - an artisanal mercantile store and community hub we call Hopewell Hub.
I bring all of my experience as an artist and scientist, entrepreneur and parent into my work with students.
