MENTORING BY EXAMPLE
As we know in our classrooms - a demonstration is usually far more impactful and memorable than a lecture. I have found this to be true when it comes to mentoring as well. Thus while I am really excited about mentoring new teachers, I know from personal experience that being observed by a mentor and having a conversation after is not the best way. I know how hard it is/ how much effort it takes to integrate new information I have been told- no matter how much I may appreciate and want it- especially when I am already giving my all to teaching my classes! But experiencing new frameworks and ideas repeatedly and collaborating with an experienced teacher - over the course of a block - facilitates the integration process.
This is why I offer to be a guest mentor teacher for a whole science unit . I want to give my mentees the best opportunity for growth. My aim is to facilitate the integration process and make a lasting impact.
I offer to teach middle school Waldorf science units as I know many class teachers find teaching science daunting and I LOVE teaching and mentoring science!
What teachers may gain from staying in / observing the class while I teach.
I am also available to discuss and help plan middle school programs that support sex education and support faculty consensus work while on site.
Basic Compensation Requirements:
A minimum of the standard substitute per diem for your school / district.
Mileage or transportation to and from your school from Salem, Oregon.
A private room with access to a kitchen for the duration of my engagement with the school or housing allowance.
Terms open to negotiation.
I look forward to hearing from you (via e-mail [email protected] and/or phone 503.428.6892) to discuss how I might be able to fill your need for science unit guidance/ teaching and teacher mentoring.
All documentation (resume, references, licenses and certifications) are available upon request.

- Class structure and expectations that make the students responsible for their learning (especially important for middle school students.)
- Rhythms and techniques that assess student comprehension of and engagement with the concepts being taught.
- How to think about teaching science (making it relevant) and plan the particular unit being taught (make it cohesive and weave in other core subjects).
- How to give feedback that supports student responsibility for their learning.
- Integrating important study skills lessons into the unit.
- The importance of taking care of yourself in the process.
